What is a merchant processing effective rate?
Effective rate is the percentage of processed payment volume consumed by processing fees for a specific period. The basic formula is total processing fees divided by processed sales volume, multiplied by 100. It provides a broader cost view than a single advertised discount rate.
Effective rate = total processing fees ÷ processed sales volume × 100
Why can the number be misleading?
Statements may separate fees, deposits, adjustments, American Express activity, or multiple merchant locations. Using net deposits instead of applicable processed volume can distort the result. One month can also be affected by annual fees, equipment charges, seasonal card mix, or unusual transaction activity.
